Proper tire maintenance is the key to maximizing the life of your tires. Discovering potential problems for your tires is as simple as giving them a quick once-over. Scan your tread for sharp objects that may have punctured your tires. Check the wear patterns on your treads as well. Excessive shoulder wear can indicate underinflation, while wear to the center of the tread can mean overinflation. Many tires have tread wear indicator bars molded into the tread. When the tread is worn down to where you can see a solid bar of rubber across the width of your tread, it is time to replace your tire.
It is recommended that you have your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. This will help to equalize tread wear. Check your tire pressure once a month and more often during the winter. As the temperature drops, so does the pressure in your tires. Properly inflated tires are both safer and more fuel efficient.
